Multiple SMTP Server Problem in Thunderbird?

Posted in geek out by Marcus Del Greco on January 19th, 2007

Outgoing mail…

Is this you?  You have a laptop that you use at work and home.  Your ISP at home only allows you to use their SMTP server (not your webhost’s or work’s).  At work, you can’t use your ISP’s SMTP server, because they will only accept SMTP mail originating from their own network.

And your email client of choice is Mozilla Thunderbird.

Ah, Thunderbird.  We love you for being free.  Your icon looks nice next to the Firefox icon.  But damnit, why do I have to MANUALLY switch my SMTP server each time I switch networks?  Sure, you allow me to add multiple SMTP servers, and even to set a “default” SMTP server.  But you always  use the first server in the list, not the default!  Switching SMTP servers so things actually work means removing all but the one server you need to use.

It takes about a full minute.  Not bad right?  A minute in the morning when I get to work.  And then another minute when I get home and want to send mail from there.  But two minutes per day times 365 days a year means I spent over 12 hours in 2006 switching my SMTP server settings in Thunderbird.

Not in 2007, babeeeee:

SmtpSelect :: Mozilla Add-ons :: Add Features to Mozilla Software

Mozilla extensions are a great thing, allowing the community to improve Mozilla applications without bogging down core development.  And presumably, the best and most appropriate extensions will eventually make it into core.  I vote for this one.

You have to change settings for the accounts and the identities to use the default smtp server instead of a specific one as well. (a one time ‘minutes investment’)
There is even a ‘buttons’ extensions that sets the default for you from the toolbar.

it already worked in 2006 babeeeeee :)

The problem is easy to solve, install the smtp selector extension (remember to manually add it to the panel since it doesnt do it by itself during installation) then the secret is: ON ALL ACCOUNT SELECT AS SMTP “USE THE DEFAULT SMTP”. Doing this all account will use what you select, not only the first smtp of the list.
